Wireless LAN
RFMD®
offers wireless LAN (WLAN) solutions for all 802.11a, b, g
and multi-mode standards. In addition to our flexible product
portfolio, RFMD provides extensive applications support, reference
designs and support documentation, all of which enable our
customers to react quickly to changes within the WLAN market.
About WLAN and 802.11 Standards
A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) uses radio frequency
technology to transmit and receive data over the air, minimizing
the need for wired connections.
802.11b/g, today's most commonly used standard, operates in
the 2.4 GHz range and provides data rates up to 11 Mbps. 802.11a
operates in the 5 GHz range, providing data rates of 54 Mbps
or more, enabling the transmission of more information with
less interference. The 802.11g, which provides data rates
up to 54 Mbps, offers backward compatibility with 802.11b
devices.
802.11n is designed for payload data rates
in excess of 100Mbps on wireless networks using MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output)
technology. MIMO technology uses multiple receivers and multiple
transmitters in both the client and access point to achieve
improved performance. The IEEE802.11n standard is expected
to be ratified by 2007.
